Project

Antarctic Whale Watching
Assessment Collaborations

Members of our foundation have previously visited and worked in the great Antarctica. This year, we plan to go there during the Austral summer 2020-2021. Antarctica has become a perfect and beautiful place to visit by tourists and scientists alike. Every year, more visitors learn and appreciate Antarctica. There are, however, regulations and rules of conduct to be able to visit this area, promoted and advocated by the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO)..

The Aims of the project

The project aim is to determine if there are behaviour changes in humpback whales’ feeding activity due to the presence of vessels.

How are we going to do this?

We are proposing this project to the Colombian Commission of the Ocean (CCO) and subsequently, collaborating with other countries interested in this objective.

We are going to be making observations from platforms (aerial, boat or land) either from the Colombia Army Fleet or with collaboration from other countries’ platforms.

What could we expect from this study?

We expect to see changes in the feeding behaviour from humpback whales in the presence of vessels compared to areas where there are no disturbances.

What’s in the future?

01.
-
Working and collaborating with countries in scientific research to gather information from whales and dolphins in Antarctica on their current threats and how to mitigate them.

02.
-
Learn more from this environment and contribute to the understanding and acquisition of knowledge with the purpose of future sustainable activities and proper management.

03.
-
Continuing with field data collection to establish short-medium- and long-term impacts that may be occurring in the zone.
